Sheffield Crown Court heard on May 29 how James Allen, aged 35, of Green Oak Crescent, Totley, Sheffield, had been in a volatile relationship with his partner before he punched her during an argument.

Laura Marshall, prosecuting, said: “On the evening of February 7 the pair of them got into an argument and as a result of that argument he reacted by punching her repeatedly.”

Miss Marshall added Allen’s partner was taken to hospital for treatment for her injuries and later discovered her TV had been damaged and her mobile phone had been taken.

Allen, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and to causing criminal damage and he admitted the theft.

The court heard Allen’s partner chose not to support the prosecution’s case.

Amy Earnshaw, defending, said Allen has been remanded in custody since March 6 and the restrictions he has faced in prison due to the coronavirus crisis have been unpleasant.

She added prisoners have only been allowed a limited amount of activity and Allen’s time in prison has been an incredibly difficult experience for him.

Ms Earnshaw described the couple’s relationship as volatile and there had been a drink-fuelled argument before he pushed her into the TV and punches were thrown.

Judge Peter Kelson QC sentenced Allen to six-months of custody which means the defendant is likely to be released having served the required half of that sentence while he has been remanded in custody.
