A thug bit a boxing fan’s eyebrow after the victim had been talking about the notorious WBA Heavyweight Championship fight between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard today, Friday, July 31, how Jarrad Knights, aged 27, of Ivy Hall Road, Shiregreen, Sheffield, assaulted the complainant at the Lounge Bar, in Bridlington.

Robert Coyne, prosecuting, said the complainant had been playing pool with a group including Knights’ friends when the complainant began talking about the 1997 Tyson-Holyfield title fight which became infamous after Tyson had bitten part of Holyfield’s ear off.

Mr Coyne added: “He states while playing pool he got into a conversation with one of the other males talking about Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield and he described how Mike Tyson had bitten his opponent.”

The complainant stated he may have got close to one of the males mimicking what happened in the fight when he was attacked by Knights, according to Mr Coyne.

Mr Coyne said Knights placed his hands on the complainant’s shoulders and put a knee in his back and forced him backwards before biting him on an eyebrow while taking him to the ground.

The complainant also claimed he struck his head on ladders during the incident and believed he had been knocked unconscious, according to Mr Coyne.

Mr Coyne said the complainant needed to be treated at a hospital with steri-strips and hepatitis vaccinations.

Knights, who has a previous conviction for assault, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the incident on November 26.

The complainant stated: “I think about the incident every day. I also have to see the injury to my eye every day I look in the mirror. I have started to wear a cap to hide the injury.”

Richard Fowler, defending, said Knights had just returned to the group and because he had been drinking he thought there had been an altercation with his friend.

Mr Fowler added Knights is unemployed but keen to return to work and had previously been in the military but had been discharged on medical grounds.

Magistrates sentenced Knights to 26-weeks of custody suspended for 12-months with a 12-week curfew.

Knights was ordered to pay £1,200 in compensation.
