Mr Fogg said he wants youths to use the box to dispose of knives in a bid to save lives.

Posting on Facebook, he said: “Yesterday a boy aged about 14 walked into our funeral home and opened his school bag and took out a kitchen knife and asked us to put it in our knife box.

“Later in the day South Yorkshire Police attended our premises and took the knife away.

“I can't begin to say how good this makes me feel because this child is no longer walking around this community with a knife. He’s not taking it into school

“This is one knife I know, but it could be a life saved.”

Residents across Sheffield have praised the teenager for handing in the blade.

Responding to Mr Fogg’s post, Nikki Flynn said: “Well done to that young boy. Hopefully more will follow in his footsteps.”

Di Warner added: “It’s a shame kids feel the need to have one with them as they don’t feel safe. Well done to the boy and you.”

Christine Valente said: “Well done to you and the boy. One life changed and or saved.”

Vicki Young added: “It’s absolutely fantastic what you are doing but at the same time it’s frightening to think school kids are taking knives into schools. My daughter is also 14 and it’s a worry for any parent.”

June Smedley Cullabine said: “Well that's one young lad who's not going to ruin his life and the life of others. Well done lad.”
