Police release picture of a Sheffield reveller who was jailed after he pushed a DJ to the ground

A drunken thug has been jailed after he threw a sandbag at a pub DJ’s car and later pushed him to the ground.

Sheffield Crown Court heard on September 23 how Sam Hurst, aged 32, of Adastral Avenue, Gleadless, Sheffield, pushed the man outside Maggie May’s bar, on Trippet Lane, after a long drinking session.

Zaiban Alam, prosecuting, said the complainant had been working at Maggie May’s, in Sheffield city centre, when he noticed Hurst - who had already been ushered out of the bar – on a CCTV monitor throwing a sandbag at his car and he confronted him.

Ms Alam added: “As he turned and began to walk away he felt a blow to his back and fell to the road and felt pain down the right side of his body.”

One of the bar security staff stated the defendant pushed the complainant forward using his hands with some force and he struck his head on the ground.

The court heard the complainant suffered a broken bone in his ankle, minor fractures to ribs and bruising to a kidney which has caused renal difficulites.

Father-of-two Hurst, who runs a building business, told police he had consumed a lot of drink and his memory was sketchy but he recalled picking up a sandbag but not throwing it.

The defendant was apologetic and added he had been running and pushed someone but did not know who because he had been drinking for six hours and it was not his intention to hurt anyone.

Hurst, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and to attempting to cause criminal damage after the incident on December 14, 2019.

Vincent Blake-Barnard, defending, said Hurst appears to have been chased before he pushed the complainant and this had not been malicious.

Judge Rachael Harrison said: “I accept he did not go out of his way to assault this man but he pushed him with such force he effectively went head first into the road.”

She told Hurst: “I accept you were trying to get away and it was because you were causing problems in that bar and refusing to pay for things you had been given.”

Judge Harrison sentenced Hurst to nine months of custody.
