A Beighton resident, who did not want to be named, claimed the thieves had used a ladder to take the star off the Christmas tree located in Sothall Green.

According to him, the wiring was broken in their attempt to steal the star and it ended up damaging other wiring for the lights.

It is understood that the lights were put up by volunteers from Beighton Environment Group and paid for through fundraising.

The local community also expressed their frustration, saying how much they looked forward to seeing the Christmas tree every year.

A resident said: "That's disgusting. I'd be happy to chip in to get a new one, maybe connected to some sort of electrification device."

Another resident agreed and would be happy to put in some new lights to make the tree looking beautiful again.
