Sheffield Crown Court heard on December 22 how Kenneth Mannion, aged 65, of Far Lane, near Hillsborough, Sheffield, was found with the indecent images on six electronic devices after a police raid at his home.

Nicola Quinney, prosecuting, said a search warrant was executed at the defendant's home on October 23, 2018, and six devices had 63 category A images, 18 category B images and 2,525 category C images, with category A being the most serious.

Mannion, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to three matters of making indecent images relating to the three different categories from between 2004 and 2018.

Rebecca Tanner, defending, said Mr Mannion is a man who recognises what he has been doing is wrong and during the intervening period between the devices being recovered and him being at court he has taken it upon himself to do what he can to rehabilitate himself.

She added: "This is a man who recognises what he has done and he is suitably ashamed of himself."

Ms Tanner said the defendant tries not to use the internet at all now but when he does his wife receives a report so she can see what the internet has been used for.

Recorder Andrew Haslam told Mannion: "Men like you, who look at images of children on the internet and make some of them accessible, exploit those children.”

He added: "Goodness only knows what trauma and distress those children go through in order for men like you to view those images and gain sexual gratification from them."

However, Recorder Haslam said he feels there is a prospect of rehabilitation for Mannion who has referred himself to a therapy group and has agreed to allow his wife to check his internet activity.

Mannion was sentenced to a two year community order with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and he has been made subject to Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.
