On 1 April, police received a call from Trading Standards at Sheffield Council about a vulnerable man in Gleadless who they believed had been targeted by criminals.

The victim, a man in his 70s, had called Trading Standards to report concerns that a man was completing work on his roof that he had not been asked to do.

Police attended the man’s house in Gleadless Common and arrested a 44-year-old Manchester man on suspicion of fraud by false representation. He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

The police inquiry has so far revealed that the victim has paid nearly £40,000 to bogus tradesmen.

Now officers want to remind everyone to keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly neighbours and report any suspicious activity or individuals who appear to be targeting vulnerable people.

Police said people should also ask for identification should someone come to their home to ask about accessing it or completing building work.
