Sheffield named as one of UK's CCTV capitals with whopping 43,000 cameras
Sheffield has been named as one of the UK’s most under surveillance cities with a staggering 43,000 cameras.
New figures reveal that there are now 5.2 million cameras across the UK – meaning there is one for every 13 people.
And Sheffield is one of the country’s most Big Brother-esque cities, ranking in fifth spot in the list of places with the most number of cameras.
London has most with 689,000 public and private cameras with Birmingham next with 83,000.
Then comes Leeds with 58,000, Glasgow on 46,000 before Sheffield with 43,000, Manchester (39,000) and Edinburgh (38,000).
Installation company cctv.co.uk, says 96 per cent of cameras in the UK are owned by homeowners and private businesses and include digital doorbell cameras.
Spokesman James Ritchey said the rise was ‘driven mainly by residents installing home CCTV and doorbell cams… their popularity is relentless as the cost of technology comes down,’ he said.
