Tony Hawkes claimed that on the night the 21-year-old suffered two fatal stab wounds to his chest, he was told: "Keep your mouth shut and it will serve you well.

"We were driving back to my flat, I was too scared to ask what was going on. They were sniggering and whispering."

Sheffield Crown Court previously heard how Mr Bagshaw was found by a neighbour at Piper Crescent, in the Southey area of Sheffield, on July 21, last year, and later died at hospital.

A 17-year-old boy, of no fixed abode, who cannot be named for legal reasons, Nicki Humphrey, 42, of Avenue Grove, Harrogate, Callum Ramsey, 18, of Batworth Drive, Shirecliffe, and Jervaise Bennett, 20, of no fixed abode, all deny murder.

Mr Bagshaw’s father Daniel Cutts had allegedly been given drugs after meeting the 17-year-old and Humphrey, but he fled without paying and was later allegedly attacked by Humphrey and the 17-year-old creating ill-feeling.

Nicholas Campbell QC, prosecuting, previously told the court how Mr Bagshaw was chased along the street and stabbed twice, after the four defendants turned up armed with a knife, in a BMW X5.

“Lewis Bagshaw managed to seek help but there was no means of saving his life and whilst being rushed to hospital his attackers fled the scene,” he said.

Before the 17-year-old, Ramsey, and Bennett got out of his car, Hawkes heard one of them say: "Did you see him running and shouting, saying "I've been stabbed" and then knocking on doors?"

Hawkes claimed that he returned to his flat with Humphrey, who revealed that he burnt the 17-year-old's clothing and stamped the alleged murder weapon into the ground.

He said Humphrey told him: "If someone shouts their mouth off we do summat about it."

And he said: “(The 17-year-old) stabbed “Baggy” twice.”

Tana Adkins, for Humphrey, suggested that Hawkes had shown Humphrey how to steal fuel.

Hawkes denied this but agreed he did explain to Humphries how to sell it on to buy drugs because they were both addicted to heroin and crack cocaine.

He admitted that his drug abuse could have affected his memory but told the court: "I know what I heard."

Hawkes denied reading the Star's coverage of the killing, which appeared online the next day, and basing his statement on details that appeared in it.

He said Humphrey stayed in the car, while Bennett passed the knife to the 17-year-old, adding that he felt the boy had been pressured by Bennett.

“I have no need to lie – I have nothing to gain,” Hawkes said. “I’m looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life for giving evidence against people.”

Gul Nawaz Hussain QC, defending, previously said the 17-year-old was involved in drug-dealing but denies murder. Humphrey claimed he had only been a driver and Bennett claimed he had no idea of any plan to attack Mr Bagshaw. Ramsey claimed he played no part in any violence.

Humphrey also pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Cutts, but the 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to this charge.

The trial continues.
