A Sheffield man who smeared faeces in police cell and stole from stores has been given a curfew

A Sheffield man has been given a curfew after he admitted smearing his own faeces around a police cell and stealing various items from stores in the city.

William McDonagh admitted two counts of shop theft and damage to a police cell when he appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on August 6, records show.

The 41-year-old, of Egerton Road, Sheffield, had been arrested earlier by police in West Street and taken to Shepcote Lane Police Custody Suite where the offence occurred on July 11.

Records show that McDonagh smeared faeces on the cell walls and door, which cost South Yorkshire Police £80 to deep clean.

He also admitted stealing items from an Aldi store on May 5 and a further offence of theft from a shop dating back to January 17, where he stole perfume from Savers Supermarket.

Magistrates gave McDonough an eight-week curfew, where he must stay at home between the hours of 8pm and 6am. He was also ordered to pay £46.36 in compensation to the two stores and £80 in compensation to South Yorkshire Police. He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.

The charge of being drunk and disorderly was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service when McDonough appeared before the court, records show.
