Sheffield man who escaped from two hospitals charged with 11 offences after police chase

A Sheffield man who escaped from two psychiatric hospitals in one week has been charged with 11 offences following a police chase through Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

Reece Campbell, 21, who suffers from psychosis, escaped from the Michael Carlisle Centre three times between July 12 and July 15 after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Following his third escape he was moved to Middleton St George in County Durham on July 19 - but escaped again just 14 hours later.

After absconding he allegedly made his way back to Sheffield by stealing vehicles.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Last Wednesday (22 July), it’s reported that a black Ford Mondeo was stolen in Derbyshire and failed to stop for officers as it travelled towards Sheffield.

"A pursuit then ensued before the vehicle was involved in a collision with a second vehicle. The two occupants of this vehicle suffered minor injuries as a result.”

The police chase began on the A621 Sheffield Road and continued until Campbell, formerly or Ironside Road, crashed on Abbeydale Road.

He also suffered minor injuries in the collision and was arrested at the scene for numerous offences.

Campbell has since been charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of burglary, two counts of failing to stop for officers, two counts of dangerous driving, criminal damage, and common assault of an emergency worker.

He is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 3.
