Sheffield man waved knife and shouted threats outside nursing home

Abid Khan began swearing and shouting abuse at a passer-by who knows him, from an attic window on Earl Marshal Road, at 7.30pm, on August 18, last year.

"Because he knew the defendant and knew he had issues he didn't think much more about it," prosecutor Neil Coxon told Sheffield Crown Court.

But ten minutes later, Khan appeared outside his mum's house, shouting threats and telling him to come outside, which worried staff at a nearby nursing home.

He told police the complainant stuck his fingers up at him and denied having a knife, but the six-inch blade was found by the side of his bed.

Khan has 13 previous convictions between 2007 and 2019 relating to dishonesty and breaching court orders.

He was last in court in May 2019 for making racially aggravated threats to his former employer after he was sacked.

Zaiban Alam, mitigating, said he acted very foolishly but he remained on the opposite side of the road.

Khan, 35, of Earl Marshal Road, initially denied harassment and possession of a knife, at Sheffield Magistrates Court, on September 17, 2019.

He was convicted after a trial on January 29.

Judge Graham Reeds QC told him: "Anybody who goes out on the street with a knife can expect a prison sentence. This is no exception. But in your case it is possible to suspend it."

He sentenced Khan to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, on Friday.
