Sheffield man breached restraining order by going to visit his parents

James John Allen appeared before Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 9, following the incident on October 7.

Allen, 36, of Lightwood Road, Marsh Lane went to his parents’ property, also in the Marsh Lane area after an argument with his girlfriend, saying that he had nowhere else to stay, said prosecutor Sarah Haslam.

The elderly couple allowed him to stay the night but the following afternoon - after a business function held by his mother - Allen asked her for £50 to pay off a debt, which she refused.

He then damaged items in the kitchen, throwing a glass at a radiator and smashing it.

He then went outside and his mother locked the door, leaving Allen shouting outside. She then called her husband, who subsequently called the police. When she told Allen this he left the property and later handed himself into police.

The restraining order was issued in August 2018 following separate assaults on his parents, the court heard. In the first he trapped his mother’s arm in a car door, bruising it badly, and also punched his father in the face.

Mitigating, Karl Meakin said that Allen had been accompanied to court by his mother, who was supporting him, and he was now back with his partner.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work and eight rehabilitation days, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
