Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on October 6 how Gary Lindley, aged 43, of Lowedges Crescent, Lowedges, Sheffield, stole the meat from Tesco on Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, on June 9.

Charlotte Hanson, prosecuting, said Lindley admitted stealing the meat because he did not have any money.

Kathryn Lill, defending, said Lindley has been using heroin for 23 years and had stolen the meat to sell on because he was struggling financially but he is now on a methadone prescription, is receiving benefits and is working through his issues.

Magistrates sentenced Lindley to a six-month conditional discharge but will be re-sentenced if he commits another offence in the next six-months. He must pay £50 costs and a £22 victim surcharge.
