Stephen Allen, 31, of Birley Moor Road, pleaded guilty to possession of the Class A drug and dangerous driving, before a trial, Sheffield Crown Court heard on Wednesday.

Judge Graham Reeds QC said the incident in September 2018 saw Allen drive on the pavement to get away but hit the police car's door as the officer was getting out.

"If the evidence had demonstrated that you drove at the officer, that would be a more serious case," he told Allen.

Andrew Smith, mitigating, said it was unclear why Allen, a maintenance operative and a father-of-two, didn't cooperate with the police.

But he said Allen’s family would be adversely effected if he was sent to prison.

The court heard Allen has previous convictions for assault in 2011 and 2015.

The judge told him: "There is every reason to believe that if you're subject to an order, that you will stay out of trouble."

He imposed a 58 week prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered him to carry out 220 hours of unpaid work.

Allen was banned from driving and must take an extended re-test before he can get behind the wheel of a car again.
