A dangerous motorist who careered into a cyclist and left him injured in the road has narrowly been spared from time behind bars.

Sheffield Crown Court recently heard how Steffan Newton, aged 30, struck the cyclist as he tried to overtake as an on-coming vehicle was heading towards him near Wentworthm, Rotherham. As the cyclist came off his bike Newton drove away.

Prosecuting barrister Richard Sheldon said two cyclists were riding in single file on Hague Lane, Wentworth, heading towards Thorpe Hesley when Newton narrowly missed one of them and as he approached the second he struck the cyclist.

Mr Sheldon added the second cyclist described people in the car shouting before the vehicle moved towards him and the front wheel struck his bicycle and he skidded and rolled along the road. He said the defendant made no attempt to stop.

Judge Graham Reeds KC told Newton, of Swangate, at Brampton Bierlow: “Anyone who drives a car far below the standards of a careful and competent driver takes the risk that his driving could cause someone serious harm or death. In your case you accept your driving fell below these standards. This was more than an accidental misjudgment and you did cause one of the cyclists serious injury.”

Judge Reeds added Newton had caused the collision and he failed to stop as the injured cyclist lay on the ground.

Father-of-one Newton, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident following the incident in September, 2020. The court heard the injured cyclist suffered a fractured collar bone and hand lacerations and bruises.

Amy Earnshaw, defending, said Newton apologises profusely and the impact upon the complainant is not lost upon him.

Ms Earnshaw added Newton panicked after the collision when he should have stopped at the scene.

Judge Reeds told Newton: “You’re obviously remorseful for what you caused and the consequences of what you have done visit you on a daily, if not regular basis.”

He sentenced Newton on October 13 to nine months of custody suspended for two years with a six-month curfew and ordered him to pay £2,400 in compensation.

Newton was also disqualified from driving for two years.
