Despite recycling centres in the city still being open, Page Hall and Fir Vale continue to be plagued by “disgusting” fly-tipping, with rubbish, clothing and mattresses dumped in the streets.

On Tuesday a picture was posted on social media showing three discarded mattresses on one road blocking the entrance to a residential street.

Councillor Mark Jones, cabinet member for environment, streetscene and climate change – who represents the area – insisted everyone is getting the message regarding waste disposal, as well as maintaining social distance, which has also been an issue.

He vowed to come down hard on those caught fly-tipping.

Cllr Jones said: "Our wardens are now on patrol in the Page Hall area seven days a week and, along with local police officers, do their best to resolve any issues they are made aware of.

“We ask residents to speak to them or to report any concerns so that we can manage these as quickly as possible. Fines will be issued to anyone seen dumping waste, or where evidence is found.”

Cllr Jones said the local authority is working closely with South Yorkshire Police to deal with the ongoing problem.

He added: "I appreciate that these are extremely difficult times for everyone. More so now than ever, our actions have a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of others, so we ask all residents to show consideration and respect during this very challenging period."
