SHEFFIELD United’s leading goalscorer Ched Evans was due to appear at court today charged with rape.

The 23-year-old, who lives near Barnsley, was due to stand trial at Caernarfon Crown Court after pleading not guilty to the alleged sex attack. Evans was charged by North Wales Police in July last year.

The footballer, who has 22 caps for his country, was arrested after an alleged incident in Rhyl, Denbighshire, Wales, on May 31.

He denies the offence.

His trial is scheduled to last around seven days.

Evans, a Welsh international, signed for Sheffield United in July 2009 for £3 million.

He started his professional career as a trainee with Manchester City in July 2007 before moving to Norwich on a six month loan spell later that year.
