Two robbers armed with an axe are being hunted by police in Sheffield after holding up a betting shop.

The masked men threatened staff and a customer with the weapon during the raid.

South Yorkshire Police said after forcing their way into Ladbrokes in Jeffcock Road, High Green, one of the robbers jumped over the counter brandishing the axe he was carrying.

A woman assistant was then forced to open up the till and hand over the takings before the robbers fled

A customer in the shop at the time, who asked not to be named, said: “I had been in the shop for a few minutes when I remember the men bursting in.

“The next few minutes were a blur with the men shouting their demands to the shop assistant and grabbing the cash.

“It was incredibly scary, I didn’t know what was going to happen or if they were going to hurt us as it all happened so fast.

”It’s hard to shake that from my mind. I would urge anyone who knows something about the robbery to call police.”

Detective Constable Iain Rawlins, who is leading the investigation, believes the suspects ran off along Jeffcock Road and may have been seen by passing motorists or residents in the area.

He said: “This was a shocking and violent attack which has understandably had a significant impact on the member of staff and the customer who were in the shop at the time.

“The shop is near a busy junction which is on the main route through High Green and motorists would have been travelling through the area when the robbery happened.

”Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area prior to the robbery? Were you in the area at the time of the incident and see two men in dark clothing running away from the scene?

“I would ask that anyone with information calls police immediately as what they saw, or know, could assist officers in identifying the offenders.”

One robber was 5ft 8ins tall, of a stocky build and was wearing dark clothing and had a grey scarf covering his face.

The other man was the same height and of a medium build.

He was wearing a jacket with the word ‘Superdry’ written in blue on the left shoulder, dark clothing and had a black coloured mask covering his face.

Anyone with information about the raid at about 8.15pm on Monday, December 16 should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
