Thieves have stolen 70 birds from a aviary in a garden in Rotherham.

The birds - 50 canaries and finches - were housed in a shed at the front of a house on Chiltern Rise, Brinsworth.

Police said they were taken during the early hours of Saturday, January 24, after screws were removed from the aviary door to get inside.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The owner of the birds is extremely upset and has owned them for many years.

“The majority of the birds are canaries and are a typical yellow canary colour, however two of them are orange which is quite unusual.

“The finches are zebra finches, with back and white stripes around their head and upper body.”

“Two of the finches are also quite unusual as they have dark coloured breasts.

“Only six of the birds have silver rings around their feet.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.
