Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on September 24 how Carl Lowes, aged 29, of Hill Top Avenue, Athersley North, Barnsley, stole six fabric conditioners from a Co-op store at Royston, Barnsley, on September 22.

Chantel Lowry-Green, prosecuting, said: “Mr Lowes went into the Co-op at Royston and was seen with a bag which was empty when he came in and full when he leaves.”

Lowes pleaded guilty to the theft and admitted breaching a two-year conditional discharge which had only been imposed on September 17 for three shop thefts.

Amy-Jo Cutts said Lowes had not been aggressive during the theft on September 22.

She added Lowes has been making good progress on a community order which includes a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement.

Ms Cutts urged magistrates to allow Lowes to continue to work with the probation service because he has been in custody before and he is fearful of prison.

She said: “It’s the last chance saloon if you impose a suspended sentence order.”

Magistrates sentenced Lowes to eight weeks of custody suspended for 12 months and he must pay £85 costs and a £128 victim surcharge.

Lowes was warned if he commits another offence the suspended sentence will be activated.
