An alarm sounded at the court, on Castle Street, Sheffield, about 12.35am, today, Thursday, February 20, and a loudspeaker message resounded through the building urging people to leave via the nearest exits.

The chairman of a magistrates’ bench in Court 5 immediately drew a halt to proceedings after spotting two red warning lights at the back of the courtroom and everyone was encouraged to leave.

The message stated: “Due to an emergency it is necessary to evacuate the building. Please leave by the nearest exit.”

The incident is believed to have been triggered after a suspected false alarm as court occupants were forced to gather nearby until they could be given the all-clear to return.
