Second man died after horror crash on M1 near Sheffield

Charles Scripps, died in hospital on May 9 - nearly two months after the collision, which involved a car, a van and a coach, on March 22.

The 78-year-old, of East Hunsbury, in Northampton, was a passenger in the car, which was being driven by his wife when the collision happened and happened between junctions 30 and 31.

An inquest into his death was today opened at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court.

Coroner Pete Nieto said police investigations were ongoing and ‘there may be prosecutions’.

He adjourned Mr Scripps’ inquest to a date yet to be fixed.

An inquest will also be held for 83-year-old Derek Jacobs, of Edgware, in Middlesex, who was driving the van and died at the scene.

Emergency services were called at around 12.30pm on the day of the crash.

According to police at the time, a white Volkswagen Crafter van had stopped in lane one and was hit by a red Ford Ka, which was then struck by a coach.
