Second arrest made following shootings in Sheffield

Police investigating two incidents of shots being fired in Nether Edge, Sheffield, in the early hours of Thursday morning have made a second arrest.

The officers investigating the shootings, on Machon Bank and Glen Road, arrested a 35-year-old man from Sheffield on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon this morning (Saturday). He remains on police custody at this time.

A 32-year-old man from Sheffield, arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent yesterday (Friday 24 July) has been released under investigation.

Shortly before 1am on Thursday (23 July), police were called to Machon Bank following reports of shots being fired. On arrival, officers discovered damage to the window of a property consistent with a firearms discharge.

Moments later, further reports were received of shots fired on nearby Glen Road. Damage consistent with a firearms discharge was discovered to a vehicle.

There were no reported injuries. The two incidents are being treated as linked and they are believed to be a targeted attack.

District Commander for Sheffield Chief Supt Stuart Barton said: “I understand that incidents of this nature cause concern for the people who live in the area. But I hope that these arrests illustrate that officers are working hard around the clock to identify and apprehend those responsible.

“There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area throughout the weekend, which I hope will provide further reassurance to the public.

“I would like to thank the community for their support and cooperation with this investigation so far and I would urge anyone who has any information that could help with the investigation to contact us. We would particularly like to hear from anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time the incident occurred.

“Anyone who does not want to contact us directly can provide information anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers.”
