As a result, South Yorkshire Police announced last night (August 4) it had rolled out a Section 60 order in the Page Hall area and surrounding streets.

It remains in place until 7.40pm today and allows officers to search any person or vehicle to look for weapons.

It comes after reports of two violent incidents in the area on Monday and Tuesday, which are believed to be linked.

Violence in Page Hall

The incident on Tuesday appeared to centre around a crash involving a car and a pedestrian on Owler Lane, close to the Jet petrol station, at around 4.30pm.

Photos show a damaged silver Volkswagen Passat left by the side of the road inside an extensive police cordon.

Two men were rushed to hospital with serious injuries reportedly caused by metal bars.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said last night: “Around 4.30pm (August 4) we were called to reports of a collision between a silver Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian on Owler lane.

“It is further reported that the occupants got out of the car and assault a man with metal bars. It is also reported that a large group of people gathered at the same time.

“Officers attended and the group dispersed. Two men received serious injuries and have been transported to hospital. Enquiries are ongoing to locate and arrest the people involved.”

The other incident at around 10.15pm on Monday, August 3, reportedly involved a disturbance involving a large group of people, some armed with wooden bats.

A woman suffered minor injuries, and a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. He was later released on bail.

Stop and search

As a result, South Yorkshire Police announced the Section 60 order under the Criminal Justic and Public Order Act 1994 at 8.40pm on Tuesday night.

While the order is active, officers can search anyone inside a designated boundary - roughly outlined by Barnsley Road, Owler Lane, Holywell Road and parts of the Wensley Estate - to check for weapons.

South Yorkshire Police was contacted for comment on how many stop-and-searches have been carried out, if any weapons were found, and if any arrests were made.

‘A significant challenge’

It comes just weeks after a court case shone a spotlight on Page Hall’s troubles, stating police have difficulty in the area because of regular, large-scale disorder.

On June 2, 2025, some 200 people were involved in ruckus with sticks, poles and garden tools after a fight broke out at the Golden Gainz Gym, on Upwell Street.

The feud was rooted in disagreements between two families, each supporting different candidates in a mayoral election in the small Slovakian village of Žehra, with a population 2,500.

At the sentencing for several of the men involved, a South Yorkshire Police Sergeant Tracy Spratt submitted ‘community impact statement’ to the court.

She described how one of the greatest challenges Page Hall poses to policing is how large groups of Slovakian residents regularly gather on street corners, which too easily escalates into violence and anti-social behaviour.

She also shared how terraced two-three bed homes in Page Hall are commonly, shockingly overcrowded, with up to 15 family members living under one roof.

She wrote: “A significant challenge for the local policing teams is large scale disorder, which is prevalent amongst this community and a way that they resolve their feuds between other Roma Slovak families or towards people from other communities that they feel have challenged them.

“During disorder, weapons are often used, as they are clearly seeking violence and to injure people.”
