The animal welfare charity was contacted after the male crossbreed dog was found staggering down Wensley Gardens in the South Yorkshire city on Tuesday, 6 October.

The dog, which has now been named Stanley by RSPCA staff, is extremely emaciated with his ribs and hip bones protruding out. He is so weak he could barely walk when found due to his poor condition.

RSPCA inspector Leanne Booth, who is now investigating, said: “This poor dog was in such a bad condition he could barely walk and was staggering down the street. He is extremely emaciated with his ribs and hip bones sticking out but despite all of this he is very friendly with everyone he meets. He was found by council workers in Sheffield who realised he needed urgent veterinary care and contacted us. He is around six to eight years old, an unneutered male and brown and black in colour.

“It’s heartbreaking to see a dog in this condition so we’re very keen to find out what happened to him.”

If anyone has any information, or recognises this dog, contact the inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

Leanne added: “Stanley is now being cared for at an RSPCA centre where he is eating well and starting to gain weight but sadly he isn’t out of the woods just yet.”
