Famous as a singer, artist and television personality, he made many visits to the city, and many will remember his painting next to the entrace of Sheaf Valley baths.
But like many others who have subsequently fallen into disgrace, with hindsight, we would perhaps have preferred him, and the other famous faces shown making high profile visits to the city in the past, had stayed away!

5. Jimmy Savile
Jimmy Savile was photographed here being interviewed for the Channel 4 music show Transmission in the City Hall Ball Room in 2006. DJ and broadcaster Jimmy Savile was awarded an OBE in 1972, and was knighted in 1990 for his services to charity, giving him the title Sir. Savile is suspected to have raped 34 women and girls and sexually assaulted up to 450 people, including some as young as eight, according to an official report. Despite persistent rumours of paedophilia, he held the honours throughout his lifetime. After Savile's death in 2011, aged 84, the Honours Forfeiture Committee faced calls to remove his honours. Despite there being no procedure to posthumously revoke an OBE or knighthood because honours automatically expire when a person dies, the committee said they would consider introducing one due to the severity of his crimes. Gary Glitter was a big name pop star when he came tp perform at Sheffield Arena in 1997.But the 77-year-old, real name Paul Gadd, was jailed for 16 years at Southwark Crown Court in 2015, for a string of historic sex attacks on three schoolgirls. Photo: Paul Chappells
7. Max Clifford
Guest of honour Max Clifford waas the guest of honour at a Arthritis Reseach dinner at Kenwood Hall in Sheffield in 1999. He was famous as a celebrity PR and publicist to some of the biggest names in news and showbiz. But he was convicted of a series of sex attacks as part of Operation Yewtree, the police investigation triggered by the Jimmy Savile scandal. He was jailed on charges of sexually abusing four girls aged between 15 and 19 between 1997 and 1985. He died in 2017. Photo: Roger Nadal
