In April last year, a 30-year-old was also stabbed on Batemoor Place.

On the streets of Batemoor this week, a woman – who did not want to be identified – told The Star: “Both stabbings were because of drugs, I’ve been told.”

Another woman said: “I’ve lived here for 50 years and things have definitely got worse. There seem to be a lot of drug-related problems here these days. It would be nice to see more police on the streets but of course they’re under the cosh.”

A carer said: “I don’t feel happy walking around here on my own, especially at night.”

A pensioner added: “You get a lot of ruffians around here. I hope the lad who was stabbed makes a full recovery. Fingers crossed those who did it get caught soon as well.”

The Star asked South Yorkshire Police to respond to people’s concerns.

Inspector Colette Fitzgibbons said: “We are committed to improving our communities – but to do so effectively and target issues that are affecting people, it is vital that we hear from them. It can be difficult for people to report information about criminal activity such as drug-dealing or anti-social behaviour – but it is important that they do so we can focus our activity. I would encourage people to get involved with engagement events such as our Pop in Police Stations which we hold at a huge variety of locations including supermarkets.

“I’d suggest people follow the Sheffield South West Neighbourhood Team Facebook page where they can find information about what we’re doing where they live. They should report concerns about criminal activity to 101 or alternatively stay completely anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling their UK contact centre on 0800 555 111.”
