'Put it away!': The new message that will greet drivers on Sheffield Parkway

Drivers heading into Sheffield along one of the city's key routes are being given a stark anti-mobile phone message.

South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Safer Roads have teamed up for the ‘hey you, put it away!’ electronic billboard message urging motorists not to use their mobile while driving.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “No text message, phone call or social media notification is worth it. If you're tempted to pick up your phone while driving, lock it away out of sight or turn it off.”

And a South Yorkshire Safer Roads spokesman said on Twitter: “You might have noticed our #noexcuse campaign on your way into work today.

“If you have passed your driving test in the last 2 years you will automatically lose your licence if you are caught driving and using a handheld mobile.”

You can get 6 penalty points and a £200 fine if you use a hand-held phone when driving.
