A burglar who admitted breaking into 40 homes in Chesterfield has been jailed for six years.

Quentin Smith, aged 35, pleaded guilty to burgling two houses in Chesterfield and asked the court to take a further 38 similar offences into account.

He was sentenced to six years in prison following a hearing at Derby Crown Court.

Smith, of Holland Road, Old Whittington, broke into homes on Little Brind Lane and Fieldview Place on October 2, 2013.

He was stopped by officers on Arundel Court in the early hours of October 2 and found to be in possession of a torch, gloves and cash stolen from the burglary on Little Brind Road.

Detective Inspector Julian Wilson said: “Smith was a prolific burglar who caused misery to dozens of homeowners in Chesterfield.

“I am pleased he has admitted his guilt and the length of the sentence he received shows how seriously the courts take this type of offence.

“Many of the homes he burgled were insecure so I would urge homeowners not to give criminals an easy target and keep your home locked at all times.”
