![A group have been put behind bars for their roles in a violent altercation, which took place on a Sheffield street.
Sheffield Crown Court heard how officers were called to The Oval in Firth Park on June 15, 2022, following reports of disorder in the street.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Investigations found that family members David Bean (pictured), Kacey Bean, Kian Bean and Danny Bean assaulted the residents of a neighbouring property, with David Bean throwing alcohol over them and shouting racist abuse.
"Both Kacey Bean and Danny Bean were found to have assaulted members of the neighbouring household, pulling them to the floor by their hair, before they were kicked by Kian Bean.
"Footage obtained also showed Danny Bean chasing people down the street with an axe in his hand. A number of weapons, including a bat, two axes and a wooden handle, were seized at the scene from Danny Bean’s car."
Speaking in court, Judge Moor-Taylor said: “David Bean you are 52, Kacey Bean is 22 years, Kian Bean is 19 years, Danny Bean is 29 – you each fall to be sentenced in respect of your role in a shameless episode of racist behaviour towards a neighbour, some of which was caught on body cam footage of police when they arrived.
“Each is unhampered by any sense of civilised values. [This] very serious incident of its kind had adverse consequences for the family that lived next door to you. [I have] no doubt whatsoever that you all plainly deserve a custodial sentence.”
David Bean, aged 52, of The Oval, pleaded guilty to affray and racially aggravated public order. On Monday, November 20, 2023, he was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
Danny Bean, aged 29, of The Oval, pleaded guilty to assault and possession of a bladed article, and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Kacey Bean, aged 22, of Skelton Walk, pleaded guilty to affray and assault, and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

![A ‘lonely’ hoarder who was found to have hidden two explosive devices inside a sunglasses case during a search of his Rotherham home has been jailed.
As he sent Brett Ainley to begin his prison sentence, the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, told him: “These were dangerous devices, and could easily…have caused injury if not death to someone standing nearby.”
He added: “Both contained ball bearings which would have become missiles in a small radius, had the devices exploded.”
Sheffield Crown Court heard how the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered by police during a search of his home address at Treefield Close, in Wingfield, Rotherham on June 23, 2023, in connection with unrelated drug matters.
Prosecutor, Caroline Abrahams, told a hearing held on November 22, 2023 that the IEDs were discovered inside a sunglasses case, stored within a satchel placed next to his sofa.
Ainley pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing an explosive substance for unlawful purpose at an earlier hearing.
Jailing Ainley for 16 months, Judge Richardson said that while he accepted his assertion that he was simply storing the IEDs there is ‘a strong need for deterrents’.
He continued: “The word must go out that if individuals have devices of this kind in their home, punishment of some substance will follow.”](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/11/24/16/17/Brett%20Ainley%3A%20%E2%80%98Lonely%E2%80%99%20Rotherham%20hoarder%20found%20with%20%E2%80%98dangerous%E2%80%99%20explosive%20devices%20hidden%20in%20sunglasses%20case.jpg?crop=3:2&width=800)

![A Sheffield man subjected his cousin to a ‘vicious’ attack as he lay defenceless on the ground, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury.
Judge Sarah Wright told 30-year-old defendant Brad Spencer: “On January 10, 2023, after drinking with the complainant and his partner. And after an altercation inside their home, you went outside and carried out a particularly vicious, brutal and prolonged attack.”
“As he lay defenceless on the ground, you struck him with 20 blows to his upper body,” Judge Wright told Spencer, noting that around five of the blows were ‘stamps’ inflicted with Spencer’s foot.
Judge Wright continued: “You left your victim with what were clearly life-threatening injuries, and a traumatic brain injury, leaving him in a coma, and with an injury that will affect him for the rest of his life.”
Sheffield Crown Court heard how Spencer’s victim - the complainant - remained in hospital for two months and 11 days following the attack, and spent around a month of his stay unconscious in a coma.
Spencer was initially charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident, but a guilty plea to a lesser charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent was subsequently accepted by prosecutors.
Judge Wright handed Spencer an 18-year sentence, consisting of 13 years’ imprisonment - of which he will be required to serve at least two-thirds - and a five year extended licence after judging him to be a dangerous offender.
As she sent Spencer to begin his prison sentence, she told him: “You still maintain you were acting in self-defence, and appear to show little remorse or insight.”](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/11/24/16/01/Brad%20Spencer%3A%20Sheffield%20man%20left%20cousin%20in%20coma%20with%20traumatic%20brain%20injury%20after%20%27brutal%27%20attack.jpg?crop=3:2&width=800)

![A Barnsley man sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy, before offering him ‘gaming tokens’ in a bid to bribe him into allowing him to continue with the abuse.
Describing the circumstances of Bryon Shepherd’s sexual offending, Judge Graham Reeds KC told the defendant: “You made him sit on your knee, put your hands down his trousers and touched his penis…you offered him money to allow it to carry on, well not real money but money for use on a game, but he refused.”
Prosecutor Nicola Quinney told Sheffield Crown Court that Shepherd, aged 21, offered the boy ‘gaming tokens’. She said the sexual assault only came to an end when Shepherd was disturbed by an individual returning to the property where the assault took place.
During the course of a subsequent police interview, the boy - who cannot be named for legal reasons - said Shepherd ‘wouldn’t stop doing it,’ although she acknowledged the sexual assault took place over a ‘relatively short period of time’.
A hearing held on November 16, 2023 was told that at the time of the offence, Shepherd was on bail for other alleged offences.
Ms Quinney said one of the conditions of Shepherd’s bail was that he was prohibited from having ‘any contact with a child under 18’.
Shepherd pleaded guilty to a single count of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 at an earlier hearing.
Judge Reeds told Shepherd, of Grange Road, Barnsley, that the only ‘appropriate punishment’ for the ‘harm you’ve caused to this young child and his family’ is one of immediate imprisonment, and jailed him for 18 months.](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/11/24/16/05/Bryon%20Shepherd%3A%20Barnsley%20sex%20offender%20tried%20to%20bribe%2010-year-old%20victim%20with%20gaming%20tokens%2C%20Sheffield%20Crown%20Court%20hears.jpg?crop=3:2&width=800)
