POLICE are urging people against leaving Christmas packaging on display outside homes - drawing attention to new valuables inside.
Community Safety Inspector Shaun Woodcock, of Derbyshire Police, said: “Potential offenders could be out and about looking for the opportunity to carry out crimes.
“Vulnerable homes and vehicles could be an easy target so we would urge people take as many precautions as possible to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
“Avoid leaving empty packaging on view or outside as it could suggest to thieves that there are new and valuable items in your home and use timer switches on lights or radios when you are out to give the appearance that someone is at home.
“We don’t want people to be alarmed, just wise. Crime levels continue to be low, with reductions of around 18 per cent over the past three years”
