Police warn ‘public could have been hurt’ after man shot on busy Sheffield high street

A shooting in a Sheffield street which left a man seriously injured has been branded ‘reckless’ by South Yorkshire Police.

A 28-year-old man was shot in his upper body in an attack on Staniforth Road, Darnall, just before 5pm on Saturday, January 4.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and underwent emergency surgery, from which he is recovering.

Nobody has yet been arrested over the shooting, which is being treated as a targeted attack.

The victim was walking along Staniforth Road when a number of people got out of two cars and a ‘confrontation’ took place.

Detective Inspector Lee Nesbeth, overseeing the police probe into the incident, said: “Our investigation is continuing to progress and we are carrying out meticulous work, reviewing evidence and CCTV footage, to identify those involved.“We are of course continuing to appeal for witnesses and would urge anyone in the area to contact us if they know anything about what happened that evening.

“This incident happened just before 5pm on a busy high street and while this was a targeted attack, it was also an incredibly reckless act that left a young man seriously injured and could have possibly resulted in a member of the public being hurt.
