South Yorkshire Police warns criminals are using ‘faceless’ accounts to target children online

“We have officers working hard to understand this ever changing landscape”

South Yorkshire Police says it is adapting its policing and investigations as criminals continue to find new ways to target children online.

The force has issued a reminder to parents and carers about the importance of talking to children about online safety, warning that criminals can hide behind fake or “faceless” accounts.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We have officers working hard to understand this ever changing landscape, adapting our policing and investigations.”

The force said that while the internet can be a valuable resource for children, it can also be exploited by criminals.

“The internet is a great resource which can be used for education or connecting with friends and family.

“However, we unfortunately know that a small number of criminals look to abuse this platform, often hiding behind fake or ‘faceless’ accounts,” said the spokesperson.

Police are encouraging adults to have conversations with children and young people about staying safe online.

The force has also pointed parents towards resources from the National Crime Agency, which provides age-specific advice and guides to help families discuss online safety.

The spokesperson added: “Online safety is a topic of conversation many of us will be thinking of having with any children and young people in our lives.”
