Police warn motorists

ALMOST 100 cars were left unlocked or with valuables on display when a police officer posed as a thief and took to the streets looking for easy targets.

The officer, dubbed ‘Smash and Grab Harry’, searched the streets of Clay Cross and Shirebrook to look for vehicles at risk of break-ins and spoke to motorists about the importance of vehicle security.

In Clay Cross he found 14 cars at Sharley Park Leisure Centre with items left on display and identified another 49 as vulnerable on a supermarket car park.

He found items including sat navs, handbags and cash on display.

The initiative is part of Operation Rocky, a month-long campaign targeting serious acquisitive crime.
