Inspector Smith from Sheffield North West neighbourhood policing team wrote an open letter to any would-be criminals in the city after the van driver attempted to hide from officers before he was arrested.

“If you want to try to avoid the police you need to pick a better place to hide than Walkley or Upperthorpe, because our PCSOs are champions at hide and seek and can sniff a dodgy van out a good mile away,” inspector Smith wrote.

After being caught, Smith said the man gave officers “a few dodgy names and iffy dates of birth” and was subsequently “whisked away in our van to L'Hotel Shepcote, our zero star-but incredibly popular destination”.

“His nom de guerre was found to be nonsensical,” the letter read.
