Police take specialist drug dog out in Sheffield city centre in bid to clean up streets

A specialist drug dog was used in a police operation in Sheffield city centre in a bid to clean up the streets.

City centre officers drafted in drug dog Roscoe to root out those carrying illicit substances.

They concentrated on city centre streets including Fargate and also took Roscoe to the Wicker area.

Undercover officers in plain clothes were ready to react when members of the public were seen to be deliberately avoiding the dog.

A post on the city centre team’s Facebook page reads: “The team has been out and about in the city centre and down at the Wicker talking to amazing folk and discussing issues that people and, or, businesses may have.

“Drugs dog Roscoe joined us again and although he is only four he’s really got a nose for it. It’s not always his nose that gets results but people’s reaction to trying their hardest to avoid him and us in our Hi Vis jackets, and officers dotted about in plain clothes.”

The team stopped and searched eight members of the public for suspected drugs possession

A man was arrested for burglary and theft and a woman was arrested for failing to appear at court.

A man was reported after being found in possession of a small lock knife.

South Yorkshire Police said a quantity of Class B drug Spice was also recovered after someone ran off after spotting the drug dog.
