Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on December 5 how Leon Derek Stather, aged 28, of Griffin Road, Swinton, Rotherham, was followed by police on Sheffield's Parkway to Junction 33 of the M1 motorway before he was stopped.

Kirsty Pearson, prosecuting, said police claimed Stather had been driving at 70mph in a 50mph zone before he was stopped and failed a drink-drive breath test.

Matt Hague, defending, said Stather had consumed a drink and he thought he was okay to drive and he had believed he had been driving in a 70mph zone.

Magistrates fined Stather £450 and he must pay £85 costs and a £45 victim surcharge. He was banned from driving for three years.
