Police send security message to Sheffield Wednesday fans after thieves break into cars on match days

A police warning has been issued about thieves targeting cars on Sheffield Wednesday match days.

The South Yorkshire force acted after a number of thefts from cars parked on Herries Road on New Year’s Day, when the Owls played Hull City.

The force said: “We’re aware of a number of break-ins that have happened during recent fixtures.

“These have been reported to us and are being dealt with accordingly.

“We’d ask that people avoid leaving any valuables on view. Even items of clothing can attract would-be thieves.”

Tweeting about her car being broken into on New Year’s Day, one Hull supporter said: “We were done. People walking past were saying it’s happening all the time. Hope South Yorkshire Police take action. To be fair, it didn’t look a bad place to park. Shows how wrong we were.

“Hope something gets done on match days to prevent this, at the very least warning signs put up to make people aware.” She added: “It certainly spoiled our day.”

Sheffield Wednesday fan, Adam Tollerfield, tweeted: “South Yorkshire Police, there are multiple break-ins on Herries Road during SWFC football matches pretty much every match day since I can remember. Why is nothing done about it?”

He said added: “It wasn't a bad place to park a couple of seasons ago but thieves target it now.”
