Officers arrested two 18-year-old women, a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl on suspicion of grievous bodily harm without intent.

They have since been released from custody while enquiries continue.

It is reported that violence flared after somebody knocked on an elderly couple’s door or window and they were challenged about it.

Video footage of the incident was reportedly shared online.

Donations have been made to help pay for CCTV for the elderly couple.

Sergeant Simon Kirkham, from the Walkley police team, said: “The Walkley team is now leading the investigation and working with victims and witnesses.

“We are in discussions soon with the Crown Prosecution Service.

“Local residents have been excellent. I am in contact with Neighbourhood Watch and other local community forums and the offers of help, support and the general rallying around of community is frankly wonderful and a testament of how from darkness a great light can emerge.”
