Police see ‘steady improvement’ in Sheffield neighbourhood where residents continue to flout lockdown rules

Police have been conducting proactive patrols in a Sheffield neighbourhood where residents are repeatedly flouting the coronavirus-imposed social distancing rules.

Officers were assisted by a member of the Roma community while out on patrol in the Fir Vale area last night in a bid to educate those who continue to ignore the pleas to stay indoors during lockdown.

It comes after the Firth Park Neighborhood Network urged the police to enforce the law much more stringently after claiming that large gangs of Roma men and women in the streets around Page Hall were breaching the restrictions on a daily basis.

Residents also received a letter from Royal Mail who were experiencing issues in delivering mail to the area as residents “congregating in the street” were preventing staff from adhereing to social distancing.

A spokesperson for the Fir Vale Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The team have been committed to educating and encouragement with those that continue to flout the regulations.

“A member of the Roma community who is studying at university has been on patrol with officers to try and assist with educating and explaining the seriousness of the situation the country is facing.

“The team have seen a steady improvement on compliance in the area however there is still progress to be made.”

Last week, South Yorkshire Police delivered leaflets to the Roma community in the area, asking them to respect the rules in order to save lives and protect the NHS.

On Saturday, officers arrested and charged a male with public order offences after he threatened a PCSO while conducting enforcement patrols.
