Police seal off Sheffield road in suspected shooting

A Sheffield road was sealed off by police after a suspected shooting.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police descended on Longley Avenue West, Shirecliffe after reports of a shooting at around 5pm this afternoon (Monday, October 19).

Images circulating on social media show at least three police vehicles at the scene, along with a cordon in place outside the shops.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “We received a call at 5pm today for reports of a firearms discharge on Longley Avenue West in Sheffield.

“Officers are currently on scene and the road is closed while officers carry out their enquiries.

“Officers have not located any victims or anyone with injuries, searches of the area are being conducted to locate those involved.”

Residents living close by reported hearing 'loud bangs’ that sounded like fireworks before police arrived.

Buses were diverted away from the route as a result of the incident.
