Police scene images as officers search for body of murdered Sheffield woman Teresa Shephard last seen in 1995

Police expect to remain at the search site for the next few days

These pictures show the resumed search that is now underway to finally find the body of a missing Sheffield woman who went missing more than three decades ago.

When Teresa Shephard first disappeared in June 1995, police commenced a routine missing person investigation.

But before long, enquiries led detectives to Teresa’s ex-boyfriend, Peter Turner, against whom she was due to give evidence in an upcoming trial.

Just over a year after Teresa was last seen, Turner, then aged 24, was convicted of her murder in July 1996, following a Sheffield Crown Court trial.

It made criminal history in South Yorkshire, because he was the first person from the region to be found guilty of an unlawful killing without the discovery of a body.

Turner received an indefinite life sentence in July 1996, and is understood to still be behind bars.

Now, 31 years and three months on from when Teresa was last seen, it is hoped that her loved ones may finally be given answers, as police resume a search for her body.

As these pictures show, South Yorkshire Police are currently searching land on Piper Lane in Aston, Rotherham.

Speaking today (Tuesday, September 15, 2026), a force spokesperson said they expect there is “likely to be an ongoing police presence at this location for the next few days”.

They added: “Teresa's family are aware of this update, and we will continue to keep them up to date with our enquiries. They continue to ask for their privacy to be respected.”
