Detectives investigating the death of a woman who collapsed in Sheffield city centre and later died are no longer treating the death as suspicious.

The 60-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was found in Waingate, close to the main entrance to Castle Market, at around 6am on Friday.

She was taken to hospital and later died.

Police initially cordoned off Waingate, where outdoor market traders work, while the area was examined and police carried out inquiries into what had happened to the woman.

Officers said they treated the death as suspicious at first ‘as a matter of routine’ until they could rule out foul play.

The woman had some injuries on her body which police wanted to establish had not been inflicted deliberately.
