Sheffield Crown Court heard on May 26 how Curtis Critchley, aged 19, of Redwall Close, Dinnington, Sheffield, came to the attention of police after he was caught stealing children’s pants from a former neighbour’s washing line in Denaby, Doncaster, and was found with more stolen children’s clothing and two indecent images of youngsters.

Gordon Stables, prosecuting, said while Critchley was under investigation he met a 14-year-old girl on Snapchat and after claiming he was aged 15 she believed they were in a relationship.

Mr Stables said Critchley moved into sheltered accommodation at Dinnington where he told staff he had a girlfriend and they carried out checks and they reported the relationship to police.

However, Critchley met the youngster, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in March and her grandmother reported her missing to police after she failed to return home.

The defendant and the girl were taken to Rotherham by a friend of Critchley’s, according to Mr Stables, and they caught a bus to his accommodation and the girl was persuaded to masturbate him over his clothing during the journey.

Mr Stables said staff at the accommodation asked the girl to leave but Critchley arranged for a friend to give them a lift to a Holiday Inn, in Manvers, Rotherham.

Critchley touched the youngster’s private parts under and over her clothing and she masturbated him, according to Mr Stables, before police found Critchley at the hotel with condoms.

The defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and one of penetrative sexual activity from March, 2020.

He also admitted theft of clothing, handling stolen clothing, and two counts of possessing indecent photos from August and September, 2019.

Nicholas Hayles, defending, said IT university student Critchley suffers with autism and ADHD and has a limited emotional maturity and has mental health issues.
