Sheffield Crown Court heard on August 18 how Joshua Jones, aged 26, of Low Road, Conisbrough, Doncaster, failed to stop and sped away from police after he had been seen at Bolton Street and Hill Top Road, at Denaby Main, Doncaster.

Judge David Dixon told Jones: “Police tried to stop your car but you set off and drove like an absolute lunatic.”

Matthew Burdon, prosecuting, said when police saw a VW Golf they had concerns about two male occupants and as one got out the driver pulled onto Hill Top Road and despite an attempt to stop him the vehicle pulled away at speed.

CCTV from the police vehicle was shown of the pursuit through a built-up area as the vehicle reached speeds of 50mph and 60mph and ignored a No Entry sign.

Mr Burdon added there was a collision and two other vehicles were damaged and the defendant continued to evade police despite having lost a front nearside tyre.

Following the pursuit, the defendant got out of the vehicle and had to be detained with a stun gun, according to Mr Burdon, before he was found with two bags of cocaine.

Jones told police he had been “stoned on weed” and described smoking 15 to 20 joints a day and that he occasionally used cocaine.

The defendant pleaded guilty to driving over the limit for cannabis, dangerous driving, having no insurance and no licence, failing to stop after an accident, and to possessing cocaine after the incident in October.

Edward Moss, defending, said: “The defendant acknowledges this was a truly appalling incident of dangerous driving.”

Jones has paid £1,300 compensation to the owners of two damaged vehicles, according to Mr Moss, and he is ashamed.

Mr Moss added the root of the offending was a cannabis addiction but he is withdrawing from the drug.

Judge Dixon told Jones: “This was utterly idiotic driving where lives of people were severely put at risk. You could have killed people. You could have killed yourself.”

He sentenced Jones to 10-months of custody and banned him from driving for 18-months.
