It was reported that the deputy departmental manager, Angie Rollinson, alerted colleagues in the department to the break-in, and appealed for anyone who was in the building or had any information to come forward.

The Hicks building, on Hounsfield Road, houses the University of Sheffield’s maths and physics departments and is one of the largest teaching hubs on campus.

The University of Sheffield has been contacted for comment.
