POLICE patrols have been stepped up at a cemetery after gravestones and plots were damaged in a wrecking spree.

Vandals struck at Eckington Cemetery overnight on Sunday into Monday - targeting around 25 plots.

Headstones and benches were pushed over and ornaments damaged.

PCSO Dale Merchant, of the Eckington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Several headstones and benches have been pushed over and ornaments damaged, which is understandably quite distressing for those families affected and also for the local community.

“Officers are carrying out enquiries and patrols are being stepped up in the area. We would also like to appeal for anyone with information about this incident to come forward.”
