POLICE patrols have been stepped up in Chesterfield town centre to prevent shoplifting and retail crime over Christmas and New Year.
Uniformed and plain clothes officers are also patrolling car parks and streets to prevent thefts from vehicles. The patrols are being carried out as part of Operation Pearl, a seasonal police initiative to tackle crime over the festive period.
Sergeant Nick Booth, who is in charge of Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Traditionally around this time of year the number of purse and shop thefts increase as the town becomes busier. Our aim is to continue to provide reassurance to shoppers and businesses, as well as prosecuting those individuals who steal and cause damage.”
Officers from the team have also given out hundreds of purse chains to town centre shoppers over the last few weeks to help prevent thefts.
