Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Henderson, South Yorkshire Police’s lead officer for tackling armed criminality, said: “I have deployed significant numbers of officers to these areas. They will be there, on patrol, 24 hours a day for the foreseeable future.

“These officers are from our Serious Violent Crime Taskforce and they will be carrying out proactive enforcement activity, including vehicle checks and stop searches. These are important and effective and they’re happening to protect you.

“In addition, I have a dedicated team of specialist detectives carrying out enquiries, which are moving quickly. We have already charged one person with possession with intent to supply drugs as part of our investigation into the Nether Edge shootings, and have also seized a firearm.

“Neighbourhood officers are working closely with partners and community representatives and will continue to do so over the coming days. They will be there to listen and to keep you informed.

“We are making every effort possible to prevent these types of incidents happening and to identify and deal with the people responsible.”
